English Language

Overall Aims

The overall aims of the English Language Education KLA curriculum are:

  • to provide every student of English with further opportunities for extending their knowledge and experience of the cultures of other people as well as opportunities for personal and intellectual development, further studies, pleasure and work in the English medium; and
  • to enable every student to prepare for the changing socio-economic demands resulting from advances in information technology; these demands include the interpretation, use and production of materials for pleasure, study and work in the English medium.

Features of the School-based Curriculum

The English Language Education Key Learning Area (KLA) is an integral part of the school curriculum that provides students with a wide range of learning experiences to enhance their:

  • English language proficiency for study, work and leisure;
  • personal and intellectual development, and social skills;
  • cultural understanding; and
  • global competitiveness.

The English Language curriculum framework comprises a set of interlocking components including:

  • subject knowledge and skills, which are expressed in the form of learning targets in the Interpersonal, Knowledge and Experience Strands, as well as learning objectives;
  • generic skills; and
  • positive values and attitudes.

To achieve the aims, appropriate school-based teaching materials are designed to:

  • devise contextualised learning activities to provide a clear, meaningful purpose for using the language;
  • relate the language and the reading and writing components thematically and conceptually to provide opportunities to allow the natural recycling of the language; and
  • focus on the learning and teaching of the four language skills, grammar, communicative functions, vocabulary and text-types through the task-based approach.

Co-curricular Activities

Co-curricular activities serve the purpose of adding variety to the English Language curriculum, broadening students’ learning experiences and catering for their diverse needs and interests. Holding various co-curricular activities like Life-wide Learning Week, STEM Project – Bridge Design, Little Lawyer Programme, Language and Cultural Week, Magazine Publication, etc., we aim to:

  • arouse students’ interest in learning English and develop their language skills;
  • stimulate and encourage students to use English as a medium of communication; and
  • provide an environment in which students can learn to express themselves using English as a tool of communication.

We also encourage students to join various inter-school activities and competitions, including the annual Speech Festival organized by the Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association, the Liberal Studies Writing Competition organized by The Standard, the CILTHK Essay Competition organized by The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Hong Kong, Hong Kong Budding Poets (English) Award by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, etc., to sharpen their critical thinking and broaden their exposure thus boosting their confidence in using the language.
